Dry Doc gave Buster Welch a record fourth win in the 1971 NCHA Futurity. Dry Doc, a full brother to previous champion Doc O’Lena, was bred by Dr. & Mrs. Stephen Jensen, by Doc Bar out of Poco Lena. Welch trained him for M.L. Chartier, Stanley Petitpren and Frank Ward.
“Dry Doc was a little athlete and could really run, stop, get back and hold a cow,” Welch said.
In its first ten years, the NCHA Futurity’s purse had grown from $18,375 to more than $112,000.
We’ll look at the past NCHA Futurity champions each day through December 9. Read the full story in Cutting Horse Gold: 50 Years of the NCHA Futurity by Sally Harrison.
