Shorty Freeman won the 1975 NCHA Futurity riding Lenaette, the first Futurity champion to be sired by a Futurity Champion. Freeman bred the mare by his 1970 champ Doc O’Lena out of Bar Socks Babe, and showed her for Terry Riddle. Riddle advanced to the semi-finals on Marion Flynt’s Lena’s Bonita, and would eventually qualify for 19 Futurity finals himself.
“Lenaette was a little more hyper kind of a mare than (her sire) was,” Freeman said. “But Doc O’Lena crossed better on hotter mares. That’s why they went to the Sugar Bars cross, and it proved out pretty well.”
We’ll look at the past NCHA Futurity champions each day through December 9. Read the full story in Cutting Horse Gold: 50 Years of the NCHA Futurity by Sally Harrison.
