When Colonel Freckles, ridden by Olan Hightower, won the 1976 NCHA Futurity, he gave Marion Flynt a unique trifecta. Flynt bred or owned the top three finishers: Colonel Freckles (owned by Bob McLeod), followed by Freckles Playboy (bred and owned by Flynt) and Doc’s Becky (owned by Flynt).
The deep field in the finals included several horses that would leave a lasting impression on the cutting horse industry, including Colonel Freckles, Freckles Playboy, Doc’s Oak and Montana Doc.
“Colonel Freckles was a lot like his mama (Christy Jay),” Hightower said. “He was a sweet natured horse and a willing horse.
“He didn’t just get down in front, he got down low all over, front and back.”
We’ll look at the past NCHA Futurity champions each day through December 9. Read the full story in Cutting Horse Gold: 50 Years of the NCHA Futurity by Sally Harrison.
