1977: Peppy San Badger

Peppy San BadgerCountdown to the 50th Futurity

Buster Welch notched up a record fifth NCHA Futurity win in 1977 with Peppy San Badger, bred by Joe Kirk Fulton and owned by King Ranch. “Little Peppy” marked 220.5 under a new five-judge scoring system.

“Little Peppy could be a real classy, pretty horse with lots and lots of style, and then he could immediately turn into a fierce working horse and hold bad, bad cows,” said Welch.

Welch and Peppy San Badger went on to win the 1978 NCHA Derby, the 1980 reserve World Championship and win the 1981 NCHA World Finals.

His offspring have earned more than $21 million in NCHA competition, ranking him in the top 5 sires of all time.

We’ll look at the past NCHA Futurity champions each day through December 9. Read the full story in Cutting Horse Gold: 50 Years of the NCHA Futurity by Sally Harrison.
