Trainer Joe Heim got his first NCHA Futurity win, owner W.D. Wood had his first Futurity horse, Colonel Freckles saw his first crop hit the big time and breeder Kenneth Hammett saw his first broodmare had produced a champion when Colonel Lil marked 224.5 to win the 1981 NCHA Futurity.
“She rose to the occasion,” Heim said. “She was exceptional in the sense that she took training very well and she also took well to work.”
In its 20th edition, the 1981 NCHA Futurity had seen its number of entries increase by ten-fold, and its purse by 50 times over the inaugural event.
