1983: Docs Okie Quixote

Docs Okie QuixoteCountdown to the 50th Futurity

Just two years after his first victory on Colonel Lil, Joe Heim joined the elite club of repeat champions when he rode Docs Okie Quixote to a 219-point win in the 1983 NCHA Futurity.

Docs Okie Quixote was bred and owned by Joice Heim by Doc Quixote out of a Johnny Tivio mare. He would go on to win the Super Stakes and NCHA Derby to become the sport’s second Triple Crown winner.

“He was a real intelligent and cow-smart horse,” Heim said. “He was a small horse and worked with a low profile, with his head and body low. And when he went to the Futurity, he had a lot of maturity about him.”

We’ll look at the past NCHA Futurity champions each day through December 9. Read the full story in Cutting Horse Gold: 50 Years of the NCHA Futurity by Sally Harrison.
