1995: Peptoboonsmal

PeptoboonsmalCountdown to the 50th Futurity

After marking 225 in the semi-finals of the 1995 NCHA Futurity, Gary Bellenfant and Peptoboonsmal worked last in the first set of the finals and survived a 40-second siege before the buzzer to repeat with a winning 225.

Bred by Larry and Elaine Hall of Weatherford, Texas, Peptoboonsmal was by 1977 Futurity champion Peppy San Badger, out of 1983 Futurity finalist Royal Blue Boon.

“I had no idea how long he could last on a cow like that (third one),” Bellenfant said. “Stay with it until I heard the whistle was all that occurred to me.”

Peptoboonsmal went on to win the Bonanza Cutting, and has sired NCHA earners of more than $16 million.

We’ll look at the past NCHA Futurity champions each day through December 9. Read the full story in Cutting Horse Gold: 50 Years of the NCHA Futurity by Sally Harrison.
