1997: Some Kinda Memories

Some Kinda MemoriesCountdown to the 50th Futurity

Mike Mowery and Some Kinda Memories scored 226 in the 1997 NCHA Futurity, erasing the record of 225.5 that Lindy Burch and Mis Royal Mahogany had established 17 years earlier.

“I never even looked at the scoreboard,” Mowery said. “I knew we’d had a good run, but by the time we reached the judges stand, I was literally mugged with people, and they told me what I had marked.”

Mowery’s sister-in-law, Shelly Mowery, had bred Some Kinda Memories, and he bought the mare in the NCHA Futurity Two-Year-Old Sale for Carl and Laurel Shrontz.

Some Kinda Memories is by Smart Little Lena, out of Some Kinda Playgirl. She would go on to earn more than $363,000 and produce earners of over $346,000.

We’ll look at the past NCHA Futurity champions each day through December 9. Read the full story in Cutting Horse Gold: 50 Years of the NCHA Futurity by Sally Harrison.
