When Kathy Daughn marked a record 229 on Royal Fletch in the 2000 NCHA Futurity, it was 15 years after her first win on The Gemnist in 1985. Only one other rider, Buster Welch, had a similar span between first and latest wins (1962/1977). The previous high winning score was Some Kinda Memories‘ 226 in 1997.
Daughn, who owned Royal Fletch in partnership with Kit Moncrief of Fort Worth, Texas, said, “I went in debt up to my eyeballs to buy his mother for $67,000. Everybody told me I was crazy, but I figured it was an investment for the future. She was the first mare I ever bought and raised a colt out of.”
Royal Fletch went on to earn $235,000 and he has sired the earners of more than $830,000.
