2001: San Tule Freckles

Countdown to the 50th Futurity

San Tule FrecklesAt the 2001 NCHA Futurity, San Tule Freckles gave Ronnie Rice his second win, following his 1998 success on Dainty Playgirl. He marked 223.5 to win from his son, reserve champion Tag Rice on Mr Beamon, with a 220. Ronnie also rode ninth-placed Smart Sugar Badger, and Tag rode fourth-placed Short Candy.

Ronnie was just as happy for his son as he was for himself.

“I wouldn’t have cared if it had gone either way,” he said. “That boy has worked hard for what he’s done and he showed his horses so good, I was really proud of him.”

Bred by S.E. Montgomery’s Flying M Ranch, San Tule Freckles is by Freckles Playboy out of the Peppy San Badger mare San Tule Lu. Montgomery announced at the Futurity that Wes Adams’ Western States Ranches had partnered with him on the stud.

San Tule Freckles went on to earn over $203,000. He has sired the earners of more than $2.6 million.
