At the 2007 NCHA Futurity, High Brow CD won the semi-finals with a 224, than cranked it up a couple points to take the finals with a 226. Austin Shepard rode the sorrel stallion, the fourth High Brow Cat of the decade to win the Futurity.
“He’s been one of the nicest horses to train that I’ve ever had,” Shepard said. “I think what sets him apart is that he’s just so smart and intelligent about a cow, and he’s just a show horse. He knows when it’s time to perform and he steps up to the plate and doesn’t let much of anything bother him.”
Bred by Bob Wendell, High Brow CD is out of Sweet Little CD. He was purchased by Arthur Noble for $63,000 at the NCHA Futurity Sales. Following wins at Augusta and Tunica, Wendell sold him to Chris and Staci Thibodeaux’s Grace Ranch. He went on to earn more than $500,000 and be named Horse of the Year.
He was reunited with Shepard at the Neiman Marcus NCHA Futurity Champions Cup last month, where they marked a 230 to win their age division of the special event.
We’ll look at the past NCHA Futurity champions each day through December 9. Read the full story in Cutting Horse Gold: 50 Years of the NCHA Futurity by Sally Harrison.
