Youth Competitors Win Big in Reno

Taylor-Strohl_Romeos_A_Cool_CatThe Junior and Senior Youth finals of the NCHA Western Nationals wrapped up on Sat., May 2, crowning two Champions and granting generous scholarship funds to both.

In the Junior Youth, Taylor Zo Strohl rode Romeos A Cool Cat, owned by Charley and Lisa McDowell, to a 220 to lead the competition by 5 and 1/2 points.

Romeos A Cool Cat, owned by Charley and Lisa McDowell, Clayton, Calif., is a 9-year-old gelding by WR This Cats Smart out of Frances Remedy by Temesun. He was shown by Steven Schlesinger during the horse’s aged event career and collected nearly $49,000.

Strohl, Clovis, Calif., has accumulated more approximately $9,000 in NCHA earnings since winning her first check in 2012.

Riley-Bishop_Real-Peppy-JewelRiley Bishop, Paicines, Calif., swept the Senior Youth competition on Saturday aboard Real Peppy Jewel. The two cut to a 218-poing score to lead by 2 and 1/2 points. Bishop, who has cut to more than $19,000 during his show career, was also a Youth finalist at last year’s Western Nationals on the horse.

Real Peppy Jewel is a 16-year-old mare by Lenas Jewel Bars out of Real Peppydera by Real Doc. She was bred by Charles Jones, Farmerville, La., and purchased by Robert Branco and John Bishop in 2002. The mare has earned just over $20,000 and piloted Bishop to 30 youth points .
